Deep in the woods I meet an introvert, a shy icon: an earthly symbol of a heavenly reality.
In the dark something mysterious and necessary is happening in the cells of this green plant. Stored energy is being released which will be used to convert carbon dioxide molecules into nutrients vital to life. This is called the dark reaction phase, one of the phases of transformation of radiant energy into a chemical form.
The words of a promise slip quietly into my heart:
“I will give you the treasures of darkness, riches stored in secret places, so that you may know that I am the Lord…who summons you by name.”*
Now here, in my own place of dark reaction, where I am starved for light, for life, for transformation, I pray: “God, give me the faith to know that indeed there ARE treasures in the darkness. Grant me the fortitude to wait for them, the grace to recognize them, the strength to gratefully receive them, the love to hold and protect them, to take them to my heart and not let them go.”
